You would be in the water if you were closer to the sea.

Blue Bay Village has a fascinating history, evolving from a modest single dwelling into the grand beach resort it is today.

In the early 1800s, Dirk Kotze built a shanty cottage on a dune, surrounded by kilometres of beach and fynbos. His only neighbours were the local wildlife, including snakes, scorpions, moles, steenbok, and bat-eared foxes. After a tough life, he eventually abandoned the cottage, which decayed until the early 1950s.

In 1953, Henry and Babeta Wicht purchased the farm Pienaarspoort, where the remains of Kotze’s cottage stood. They transformed this ruin into their family home, expanding it as their family grew to nine children. This original homestead is now the 32-room lodge managed by Andre, one of the Wicht children. Over the years, Andre and his daughter Mart-Mari have expanded the lodge into a full resort, adding suites, self-catering cottages, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a hall, a conference centre, and a children’s play area.

Blue Bay Lodge, now extended to Blue Bay Village, was once the home of the Wicht family. Today, it is managed by the third generation of the Wicht family. Blue Bay Village is located at the entrance of the historic fishing village of Saldanha on Henry Wicht Street, named after the family that developed the lodge overlooking the bay and the Saldanha Steel plant.

Saldanha Bay is a town of contrasts, blending areas of natural beauty with large industrial plants from the commercial fishing and steel industries. The SA Naval Training base adds a military presence to the coastal community. Despite initial impressions, Saldanha offers a rich heritage and history, with its rugged plains and fynbos-rich hills contributing to its unique charm and depth of natural and cultural offerings.

A portion of this historic land is available for public purchase in the newly developed Blue Bay Village. This development offers a unique opportunity to own property in a region steeped in history and natural beauty.
